What is VoIP?
With distance working becoming the norm, it’s vital that your site team can still collaborate and keep in contact with one another. While Teams, Zoom and more have taken centre stage, simply picking up the phone is still the easiest way to get in touch with someone.
We’ve often seen sites being run from a mobile phone and while convenient, that creates a single-point-of-failure and inherently can’t scale. Big office-type phone systems from Panasonic, Mitel and BT are still popular on modern sites, giving reliable telephone services but they are expensive and slow to deploy, require extra cabling, tricky to maintain give you zero mobility across your sites in the event you need to shift cabins.
VoIP (or “Internet phones”) has been around for a while now and alleviates much of this problem by running phones over whatever Internet connection you have to hand. They still (mostly) need cabling but at least it’s the same type that you would run for your computers. It gives you enormous flexibility but doing a good job of this on a construction site is less than straightforward.
Why is Outpost better?
VoIP relies entirely on having a stable, low-latency Internet connection – where the time it takes for the data “packet” to route to the other side is both consistent and good. Taking a 4G router, plugging a handset in and hoping for the best will undoubtedly give you a frustrating service, especially scaling to multiple users.
Fortunately, Outpost, our industry-leading construction site connectivity solution, was built not only with VoIP in mind, it has a fully-integrated solution that does the job right, first time and scales seamlessly across all your sites. Because we have multiple 4G connections in each Outpost, it selects the best one for the job and keeps your calls snappy and clear.
Outpost can be supplied with handsets from basic wired ones, to wireless, multi-user conference and even fancy video systems. As you would expect, we manage and monitor this all for you, as part of our complete end-to-end package.
We recently deployed our VoIP alongside our Outpost for our clients Bowmer+Kirkland. Openreach were unable to deliver the multiline they ordered to support a phone system (a common result on construction sites). Configuration of the on-site Outpost hardware was straightforward, was completely remotely and we supplied phone handsets to easily connect up on site. A simple, straightforward and very cost effective alternative to the traditional approach, with all the added value noted above!
When asked about how Trench Networks have performed since coming on board, Mike Hammill, IT Technical Manager, Bowmer+Kirkland said:
“Your system and staff have more than proven their worth to us as a company. You must be doing something right, and a lot is down to staff attitude and commitment, and you certainly have a good bunch there!”
